Home Energy Audit — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a home energy audit? What does it measure? Is it worth doing? Phoenix-specific answers.

Home Energy Audit — Frequently Asked Questions

A home energy audit is the diagnostic foundation for any Home Performance work. It tells you what's actually wrong with the house in measured numbers — not in marketing language. Here's the picture.

What is a home energy audit?

A home energy audit is a comprehensive evaluation of how efficiently your home uses and retains energy. Unlike a simple HVAC check, it examines your home as a complete system: ductwork, insulation, window and door seals, air handler sealing, and combustion appliances all in context.

What does the audit include?

Way Cool's 4-hour audit includes: utility bill analysis, attic and insulation inspection, blower-door test (envelope leakage), duct leakage test (system losses), thermal imaging (insulation gaps and thermal bridges), smoke-pencil air-leak tracing, and combustion safety check on gas appliances. You leave with a written report and prioritized fix list.

What is a blower-door test?

A blower-door test pressurizes (or de-pressurizes) the house with a calibrated fan and measures how much air leaks out per minute. The result is given in CFM50 (cubic feet per minute at 50 pascals of pressure). Phoenix homes typically range from 1,500 CFM50 (very tight, modern construction) to 5,000+ CFM50 (older, leaky).

What is a duct-leakage test?

A duct leakage test pressurizes the duct system and measures how much air escapes. In our testing across Phoenix homes, we routinely measure 20–30% of conditioned air escaping through duct leaks before it reaches a register. Sealing those leaks is one of the highest-ROI fixes available.

Why is the audit free?

We offer the audit free to first-time customers because we believe in earning trust over time. The audit produces a written report you can use however you want — fix what's most impactful first, get competing quotes, or do nothing. Our bet is that when you see the actual diagnosis in measured numbers, the right next step is usually obvious.

What kinds of fixes do audits typically recommend?

Most common: duct sealing, attic insulation top-offs, air-handler closet sealing, smart-thermostat install, recessed-light air sealing, weatherstripping at doors and windows, and (for older homes) HVAC right-sizing. The audit prioritizes by impact-per-dollar, not by what we sell.

If you've never had a real Home Energy Audit on your Phoenix home, it's probably the best $0 you'll ever spend (for first-time customers). Schedule online or call (623) 250-6492.
